Gefallenendenkmal

Born on October 24, 1866 in Munich, died on July 7, 1934 in Munich. The sculptor Eduard Beyrer was the son of the sculptor Josef Beyrer, and from 1880 worked in his father's studio. From 1892 to 1895, he studied sculpture under Wilhelm von Rümann at the Munich Academy (entering on May 4, 1892). From 1895 to 1896, he received a state scholarship to study in Italy, primarily in Rome. He returned to Munich in 1897. In 1900, he traveled to Paris, and in 1911 to Athens and Istanbul. He worked as a freelance sculptor in Munich from 1897 to 1934. He contributed to the design of numerous fountains, both within and outside of Bavaria. His major works include the Prince Regent Fountain in Kulmbach, completed in 1897 with the architect Martin Dülfer; the statue of Duke Johann of Bavaria at the New Town Hall in Munich, 1904; and the war memorial in Grünstadt, 1905. He also created the putti in the Bruno Pauls waiting room at Nuremberg Central Station. He devoted himself particularly to the design of funerary monuments and portrait busts. Many of his works can be found in the old northern and southern cemeteries and in the Waldfriedhof cemetery in Munich. He received numerous international awards and public commissions. His entire career spanned from 1881 to 1934 in Germany. War Memorial In honor of the university members who fell in the First World War, the monument created by the sculptor Eduard Beyrer in 1925 was unveiled to the public on July 1, 1930, in the palace gardens in Erlangen. It depicted a half-naked warrior wearing a steel helmet, seated in an armchair with his arms bound to the armrests, holding a broken sword. The inscription "To defy all powers" testifies to the Treaty of Versailles, which was perceived as a dictate. On the orders of the US military government, the warrior figure was destroyed in November 1946 and replaced with a flower bowl. Only the eight stone blocks bearing 384 names and the pedestal remain. From the outset, this monument was instrumentalized by shifting political currents. During the Weimar Republic and the German Democratic Republic (DR), nationalist rallies were held here. For example, in his speech at the unveiling in 1930, the neo-Nazi student Sunkel demanded the abolition of the Weimar Republic. The graffiti during the 1991 Gulf War can also be attributed to this "tradition." Today, only four memorial stones bearing the names of the dead remain. |
